There are many types of distribution cabinets, which can be divided according to different classification standards. The following are some common types of distribution cabinets and their characteristics:
- Classification by structural characteristics and purpose
Fixed panel switch cabinet (distribution panel)
Open switch cabinet with panel shielding, with protection on the front, and live parts can still be touched on the back and sides, with low protection level.
Commonly used in industrial and mining enterprises with low requirements for power supply continuity and reliability, as a centralized power supply for substations.
Protective (enclosed) switch cabinet
A low-voltage switch cabinet with all sides enclosed except the mounting surface.
Electrical components such as switches, protection and monitoring control are installed in a closed casing made of steel or insulating material, which can be installed against the wall or away from the wall.
Applicable to various occasions requiring higher safety protection.
Drawer switch cabinet
The closed casing is made of steel plate, and the electrical components of the incoming and outgoing line circuits are installed in removable drawers, forming a functional unit that can complete a certain type of power supply task.
The functional unit is separated from the busbar or cable by a grounded metal plate or a functional board made of plastic, forming three areas of busbar, functional unit and cable.
There are also isolation measures between each functional unit, which has high reliability, safety and interchangeability.
It is suitable for industrial and mining enterprises, high-rise buildings, etc. that require high power supply reliability as a centralized control distribution center.
Power and lighting distribution control box
Mostly closed vertical installation, the shell protection level is determined according to the use environment.
Mainly used as a distribution device at the production site of industrial and mining enterprises. - Classification by use
Low-voltage distribution cabinet
Widely used in industrial, commercial and residential areas for power distribution and control.
High-voltage distribution cabinet
Used for power generation, transmission, distribution, power conversion and consumption of power systems, and plays the role of switching, control or protection, and is usually used in high-voltage power systems.
Power distribution cabinet
Used to provide power supply to meet the power supply needs of various power equipment.
Lighting distribution cabinet
Used to provide lighting power to meet the power supply needs of various lighting equipment.
Control cabinet
Used to control the operation of various electrical equipment, usually including various control components and indicating instruments. - Other classification methods
Classification by installation method
Wall-mounted, front-mounted, drawer-type and fixed distribution cabinets, etc., differ according to the installation location and use environment.
Classification by control function
Automated distribution cabinets, monitoring distribution cabinets and conventional distribution cabinets, etc., respectively realize automatic control, monitoring and management through industrial control systems, monitoring software and hardware.
Classification by circuit breaker installation method
Mobile switch cabinets and fixed switchgear, etc.
Classification by insulation characteristics of distribution equipment
Air-insulated switch cabinets, gas-insulated metal-enclosed (GIS) switch cabinets and hybrid technology (MTS) switchgear, etc.
In addition, there are some special types of distribution cabinets, such as:
electrisity control box

Power supply line cabinet: main power supply line, equipped with main circuit breaker, used to control the total controller of the production link.
Metering cabinet: measures and records the amount of power supplied, usually equipped with PT, CT and electric meter.
Busbar cabinet: When the system has two power supply lines and the two lines are standby for each other, the switch cabinet used to connect the main busbars of the two power supplies.
PT cabinet: Voltage transformer cabinet. Usually, there must be a set of PT cabinets in the high-voltage system to detect the busbar voltage and realize the protection function.
Contact cabinet: Used for the connection between several rows of low-voltage cabinets with several transformers. When a transformer fails, another one can be used to drive other rows of low-voltage cabinets.
Ring network cabinet: That is, the power supply trunk forms a closed ring, and the power supply supplies power to this ring trunk, and then distributes power to the outside through high-voltage switches from the trunk.
DC panel: Converts AC power into DC power to provide power supply for electrical secondary equipment protection and operating mechanisms and indicator lights.
Central cabinet: A power distribution equipment used to supply power to low-voltage distribution boards, and can also monitor, protect and control low-voltage power supplies.
Capacitor cabinet: A distribution equipment used in power systems to improve power factor and voltage quality.
Battery cabinet: a power distribution equipment used to store batteries, control battery charging and discharging, and protect batteries.
PLC cabinet: a control cabinet used in industrial automation control systems, mainly used to place integrated control systems composed of industrial computers, PLCs, etc.
Box transformer: a compact box transformer can place three distribution rooms, namely, high-voltage room, low-voltage room, and transformer room, in the same box, or separately in different boxes. The box transformer is a compact complete set of power distribution equipment that combines high-voltage switch equipment distribution transformers, low-voltage switch equipment, electric energy metering equipment, and reactive power compensation device integrated automation system, communication, telecontrol, metering, capacitor compensation, and DC power supply in one or several boxes.
